James brace sees Chelsea go further clear at the top

Newcastle are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Chelsea and City's success following huge investment from foreign owners. However, the Saudi-owned Magpies have a battle just to remain in the top flight as they remain rooted in the bottom three without a league win this season.

Chelsea were without the injured Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Mason Mount, but the European champions still had far too much class at St James' Park. Reece James produced two stunning finishes from right wing-back before Jorginho's penalty rounded off the scoring. All the goals came in the second half after a first half in which Chelsea were better, but was far less one sided than the second 45.

Newcastle had a dangerous move in the opening minute through Ryan Fraser, but his decision to cross for Callum Wilson instead of shoot was the wrong one. After that, Chelsea had the upper hand. However, it was a half of few chances, but Hakim Ziyech looked bright for Tuchel's men. The Moroccan had the ball in the back of the net after 29 minutes, but the linesman correctly flagged him offside. Then, shortly afterwards, he missed a sitter from James' cross when he blazed over at the back post.

The home side had the odd dangerous attack through the likes of Saint-Maximin, but Edouard Mendy had nothing to do in the Chelsea goal. In fact, Ziyech had another stiff of goal just before the interval, but he failed to hit the target. In the second half, the Blues upped the tempo and they rolled over their opponents.

Ziyech had two opportunities in the first three minutes of the half. The first of which saw him hit straight at Karl Darlow while the second effort from outside the box struck the post after taking a wicked deflection off Jamaal Lascelles. The chances kept on coming and Jorginho hit off target after being fed by Ziyech. A Chelsea goal was only just around the corner.
