Carli Lloyd plays final UWNT game as tributes pour in

USWNT legend Carli Lloyd played made her 316th and final appearance for the team in a 6-0 thrashing of South Korea on Tuesday night.

Lloyd, a two-time World Cup winner, two-time FIFA women’s player of the year and two-time Olympic gold medalist, announced her plan to retire after the October series of games earlier this year to end a senior international career than began in 2005.

The 39-year-old, who will also wrap up her club career with NJ/NY Gotham at the end of the current NWSL season, played just over an hour of the contest against South Korea in Minnesota.

When her number came up on the substitutes board, Lloyd was given a standing ovation. She took off her boots on the pitch, hugged her teammates and even removed her shirt to reveal a second jersey underneath which had her married name, Hollins, on the back.

When announcing her retirement plans in summer, Lloyd had mentioned wanting to spend more time with her family and particularly her husband, Brian Hollins.
