In the 2021/22 Serie A season, Christian Eriksen will not be able to return after a cardiac arrest

Serie A rules prevent Christian Eriksen from playing for Inter for the remainder of the season following a cardiac arrest.

Having collapsed on the pitch early in Euro 2020, Eriksen was installed with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The device was designed to monitor Eriksen's heart and potentially restart it if he suffered any further problems.

Despite his excellent physical and mental condition, Eriksen cannot play in Italy until his ICD has been removed, even though other athletes, such as Daley Blind, have been playing safely with a similar device for years.

It should be noted that the player Eriksen has been temporarily restricted from sporting activity in the current season by the Italian medical authority from sporting activity in the current season," an Inter statement read (via Sky Sports News).

The reigning Serie A champions did admit that Eriksen could be loaned out to a country where he could play for the rest of the season.

Despite the player's current conditions not meeting the requirements for achieving sporting fitness in Italy, the same could instead be achieved in other countries where the player could resume competitive activity,' they added.

Tottenham have previously been linked with a loan move for Eriksen, while Leicester City held negotiations back in January but balked at Eriksen's wages.

The Dane was tipped to move to Ajax during the summer, and real Madrid have even been tipped to sign him in January based on some unconvincing rumours.

Eriksen's contract with Inter extends until 2024, but he appears to have played his last game for the club if this ICD is not removed.

Eriksen, 29, hasn't always had things easy in Italy. A high-profile arrival from Tottenham in the middle of the 2019/20 season, Eriksen struggled for form for the rest of the year, scoring just once in 17 appearances.
