Jurgen Klopp has stressed that he was never frightened by Liverpool's form last season because he always knew his team would be back among Europe's best once their injury crisis was over.
As a result of injuries, the Reds lost key players such as Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Fabinho, and Jordan Henderson for significant periods of time, causing their form to plummet and leaving them perilously close to missing out on Champions League football.
The lack of consistency had some questioning whether Liverpool were even good enough to be seen as title contenders anymore, but this season has proved otherwise. Klopp's side are unbeaten in all competitions and have bagged ten goals in their last two games.
This has been an emphatic response from Liverpool, but one that Klopp says should not have surprised anyone.
'I didn't doubt it, I didn't really have to think about it,' he said (via The Mirror) when asked if he thought Liverpool could rediscover top form.
When you lose pretty much all your defence in October, you are still assumed to win every game. When we solved that problem, it was clear we would be better again and that is the situation again. It doesn’t mean we will win but it gives us a chance.
It is really important in life to remain calm when everybody is really excited, so that we can make the right decisions.
Were we better 18 months ago? It doesn't matter, you have to be the best you can be in the moment. Think about this: when you win 5-0 against United, it seems perfect, but it wasn't.
We have had some pretty impressive scorelines so far, but we don't expect it to happen all the time. We have no problem winning a game 1-0. Absolutely not.
Liverpool head into Saturday's match against Brighton one point behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who will host Newcastle.
